Human Giver Syndrome - An Occupational Hazard for Donor Relations Professionals?

Kay Coughlin

Friday, September 24
11:00 – 12:00 PM (PT) | 2:00 – 3:00 PM (ET)

About the Session

Human Giver Syndrome is the belief that some people should devote themselves to helping other people succeed. While the idea has been a foundation of many cultures for thousands of years, only recently did it have a name. What happens when donor relations professionals try to please everyone – gift officers, vice presidents, donors – at the expense of their own responsibilities? The stakes couldn’t be higher for Givers who are feeling squeezed, pushed, dismissed, defeated, and exhausted. This session teaches you how to spot warning signs of this syndrome, how to avoid it, and how to create your own success without sacrificing your own wellbeing.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn what "Human Giver Syndrome" is, and why you might be expected to be a "human giver" even if you didn't ask for that label (and even if it doesn't suit you);
  • How to identify the specific areas or relationships where Human Giver Syndrome could be influencing your work;
  • What is a boundary and how do you set them at work?; and -How to ask for clear expectations so you know exactly what you are and are not being held accountable for.
